Introduction to Coaching Caregivers: Context and Considerations

This class explores the challenges of caregiving, and provides a framework for coaching caregivers as they seek to overcome these challenges and thrive.

We will briefly consider multiple caregiving contexts, the onsets of caregiving, and the common challenges or areas of growth that caregivers face, as well as the benefits of working with a coach. This course will provide tips and tools for coaches who work with caregivers. In addition, we will actively use the skills we are developing in coaching each other and strategizing how to coach others.

The first two classes will meet for 90 minutes and the last class will meet for 60 minutes, for a total of 4 class hours.

Course Objectives:

  • To understand the characteristics and settings of caregivers
  • To understand how caregivers can hold both the joy of relationship with their loved one and the grief of losses due to the impact of the caregiving and illness
  • To understand how age, stage of life, and resources greatly impact the caregiving experience
  • To explore the questions and tools that can be used to coach caregivers
  • To experience coaching others using the tools developed
