Christian Grief Coaching

blockTextBody

"Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep." Romans 12:15 (KJV)

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

In a culture where grief is prevalent, people find it challenging to navigate loss and grief. Society often wants people to "hurry up" and move on. In times of loss, it can be impossible for people to journey forward. From a Christian perspective, we know that hope is one factor that can give people a glimpse of joy, knowing that they can and will triumph over tragedy. However, the void and emptiness might still be stifling the movement forward. Some questions may be asked, such as why did I have to go through this loss? What does it even mean? Does God even care that I am suffering? Is it fair? This course will examine the spiritual formation and the faith development of individuals who grieve death and non-death losses. Where do faith and spiritual beliefs align with grief experiences? How does culture influence spiritual aspects of grief, where those experiences are safe and sacred? How do we support people with their grief, offering hope that they can move forward through the darkness of grief in the hope of God? This course will introduce the COME model, where compassion is demonstrated to support clients, whose faith may or may not align with Christian values and beliefs.

Reading, reflective discussions, journaling activities, case studies, role-playing, and practical approaches will be used in this course.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the spiritual responses to loss.
  • Expose the misconceptions and myths of grief, faith, and culture.
  • Educate on the journey of grief and loss from a Christian perspective.
  • Explore the coach's comfort level regarding the client's faith and beliefs.
  • Examine faith values and spiritual beliefs with a client and how those values and beliefs can be utilized as strength markers for moving forward.
  • Evaluate other world religions and how they navigate mourning and grief.
