Life Coach
Volume 7 Issue 7 – July 2008
In This Issue:
Tomorrow's Life Coach (TLC) is a monthly online
journal from the Institute for Life Coach Training
(ILCT) that nourishes the intellect, intuition and
inspiration of the personal and business coaching
community.
Pat's Ponderings - Business
Case for Leadership and Executive Coaching
Between 25 and 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies
use executive coaches, according to the Hay Group, an
international human-resources consultancy. According
to a survey by Manchester, Inc., a career management
consulting firm out of Jacksonville, Florida, about
six out of ten organizations currently offer coaching
or other developmental counseling to their managers
and executives. Another 20 percent of companies said
they plan to offer coaching within the next year.
Although it was once used as an intervention with
troubled staff, coaching is now part of the standard
leadership development training for executives in such
companies as IBM, Motorola, J.P. Morgan Chase, Hewlett-Packard
and many others. Brokerage firms and other sales-based
organizations such as insurance companies use coaches
to bolster performance of people in high-pressure, stressful
jobs.
We announced last month our new program this Fall
for a leadership and executive coaching credential (Certified
Leadership Executive Coach – CLEC) In part we
are expanding our existing track because of the rapidly
expanding need for this coaching niche, and partly because
of the expressed feeling among many of our students
that they need additional training and credentials to
work as corporate and executive coaches. So utilizing
instructors who have a proven expertise in the leadership
and executive coaching arena, we will begin offering
the best training for the best leadership and executive
coaches this Fall.
We hope you will participate in this process by asking
questions, joining us for the Coaching Forums on July
22nd and August 26th, visiting our new website www.leadershipcoachtraining.com,
and letting us have your input about what your needs
are in this area. Please submit questions and comments
to Edwina@lifecoachtraining.com

Uncommon Conversation - Transpersonal
Coaching: Mind-Body-Spirit with Dr.
Patrick Williams
Join The
Coaching Commons on July 8th at
2:00 p.m. Eastern for a fascinating conversation
with Dr. Patrick Williams.
Transpersonal Psychology, born of the 1970’s,
but influenced from the theories and practices
of Jung, Assagioli, Maslow and many others,
has found a home in Transpersonal approaches
to Life Coaching. Total Life Coaching is
the operating system of all coaching because
we are working with whole human beings.
Transpersonal approaches include methods
and language to explore and discover new
learning for the coaching client in the areas
of Body, Brain and Being — or Body,
Mind and Spirit. The spiritual element is
sometimes difficult to discuss or to apply
in coaching. However, having received his
doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology in
1977, Dr. Williams will cite research, theories
and practical aplications to add the transpersonal
approach to your coaching psychology toolkit.
Today, more than ever, coaching is attracting
clients who are willing and desire to engage
in deeper conversations beyond their business
success or leadership skills. Behind those ‘door
openers’ are the depth of transpersonal,
whole person, deep conversations of meaning,
purpose and spirituality.
Dr. Williams will present brief sumaries
of the key theorists of transpersonal psychology
and their connection to coaching today. In
addition, call participants will have the
opportunity to
- engage in experiential learning
of techniques and tools that not only
resonate with their total being,
- but also take away tools they can use
with clients in a strategic and acceptable
manner.
Participants will leave the call with:
- an understanding of the original theorists
influencing coaching psychology
- the ability to use the Coaching Mandala
(wheel of life) as a conversational opening
for discussing the transpersonal
- an experience with these techniques
and concepts used in a coaching demonstration
- new tools to engage your client in tapping
transpersonal consciousness

Please join me in giving a warm welcome
to Pat as our incoming President. I think
all who know Pat will agree he has tremendous
enthusiasm for coaching, is extremely well
connected and is an ideal ambassador for
the goals of our organization.
This is an exciting time for ACTO
as ICF continues to work on their idea
of an ISO credentialing process which
is certain to affect our schools and
how we operate. Our growing influence

Emotional Intelligence
by Dr. Patrick Williams, Ed.D., MCC
The concept of emotional intelligence became popular
after the immense success of Daniel Goleman’s
books in the 1990s, Emotional
Intelligence, Emotional
Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, and Working
with Emotional Intelligence.
The business community was rocked by the research that
overwhelmingly showed that up to 90
percent of one’s
performance effectiveness was due to emotional savvy
rather than technological knowledge.
The evidence is now clear that people skills are far
more important than IQ when it comes to the bottom line.
Not only are emotions very much a part of the work experience,
but to a large degree they set the course that a company
follows.
Unlike IQ, which is unchanging from childhood on, emotional
intelligence can be developed. In fact, it usually does
become greater with age and maturity. The importance
of developing one’s emotional intelligence is
essential to success in the workplace. Utilizing the
power and energy of one’s emotions leads to high
motivation, and improves problem-solving and decision-making.
People work better when feeling good, and feeling good
about oneself and others requires good management of
emotions. Some people are better at this than others,
but everyone can learn the skills.
Understanding emotions contributes toward building
an emotionally intelligent organization. An emotionally
intelligent organization can be imagined where:
- Everyone communicates with understanding
and respect
- People set group goals and help others work toward
them
- Enthusiasm and confidence in the organization
are widespread

The Importance of Wise Elders in Maintaining Cultural
Wellness: Lessons from the African Bush
Have you outgrown your practice? What's next? What's
calling you in the second half of your life? This session
helps address these questions and find new callings.
Based on lessons learned on Pat's recent walking safari
in Africa, and interactions with tribal elders, this
session offers new ways for veteran wellness professionals
to renew themselves and revitalize their practices for
the second half of life. Using the "Four Flames
of Vital Aging," this session will help participants:
learn why it's essential to go "back to the rhythm";
learn new ways to grow whole, not old; learn why purpose
is good medicine; learn what it means to be a "wise
elder coach"; and learn new lessons for coaching "new
elders". This highly interactive "fire circle" session
provides a framework and essential conversation for
vital aging, understanding ones personal anthropology,
and coaching/mentoring in the second half of life.

Total Life Coaching: Body-Mind-Spirit
Life Coaching involves supporting clients in discovering
and creating what they most want in their lives. The
coaching process calls forth the best in both practitioner
and client-eliciting information from previously un-accessible
places deep inside. Body, mind and spirit are one. This
workshop will assist participants to deepen awareness
by turning attention inward to listen to one's inner
voice and messages from the body using breath and mindfulness.
This is of paramount importance for whole person wellness.
Engaging body, mind and spirit creates a deeper sense
and experience of our authentic selves to forward the
action toward achieving one's goals.

Therapist
as Life Coach: An Introduction for Counselors
and Other Helping Professionals, Revised
and Expanded Edition, by Dr. Patrick
Williams MCC, Deborah C. Davis
In 2006, U.S. News and World Report listed
coaching as one of the 10 top growing professions.
The first edition of Therapist as Life Coach,
published in 2002, anticipated this trend, and
since its publication it has become a standard
for therapists who wish to transition or expand
their practices into life coaching. Pat Williams
and Deborah C. Davis have revised their classic
practice-building book for today's therapists
and future coaches. Every chapter in this second
edition has been updated and rewritten, reflecting
the growth of the coaching field and its increasing
appeal to not only therapists, but all helping
professionals.
There is new material throughout, including:
- an overview of recent coaching developments
- updated liability concerns
- new business opportunities
- a new section on the research about coaching
