Christian Coaching Program - Foundational Course

The Christian Coaching Program (CCP) is designed to facilitate/assist Christians with a people-helping background to move from a professional, pastoral or lay counseling practice into coaching in the shortest amount of time possible.

The CCP is being offered in response to requests we have received from several people desiring a model of coaching training that integrates principles of Judeo-Christian theology, ministry of the Holy Spirit, and is solidly grounded in Scripture.

The CCP includes all material covered in the regular Life Coach Training Program and is fully in alignment with ILCT’s ACTP.

All classes are taught by ILCT faculty who are ICF credentialed (or completing requirements for credentials). The classes are designed for human development professionals, church leaders and others in positions of ministry for whom Christian beliefs are a major part of their approach.

The Foundational Christian Coaching Course (see schedule below) includes all material covered in the regular foundational class, including the 400-page student manual. The required texts may be purchased via our bookstore or the links below.

Christian Coaching Foundational Course

Our Foundational course was designed specifically for human developmental professionals and others with backgrounds in the people business. This is cornerstone of our comprehensive ICF Accredited Coach Training Program. The original ILCT foundational class was rooted in transitioning therapists and counselors into coaching. It has blossomed into a class that serves all human development professionals, such as educators, therapists, social workers, counselors, attorneys, consultants, librarians, etc. This forty-hour course (see schedule below) provides essential knowledge and skills to launch a coaching career through twice-weekly classes and once-a-week Buddy Coaching practice. To gain the most out of this learning experience, students will be asked to prepare for and participate in two teleclasses per week (1 hour each), complete post-class assignments (called fieldwork) and participate in 1 weekly Buddy Group "practice" sessions (also 1 hour) The total estimated time commitment per week is 4 to 5 hours.

This forty-hour class is divided into three modules, with a required Buddy Coaching component that complements the ongoing instruction. The ICF Core Competencies provide the basis for the knowledge and skills presented.

Since this is an ICF-accredited course, students must attend at least 35 of the 40 teleclasses and complete a written exam of 70% or better in order to successfully pass this course. Other course completion requirements apply - please click here for a complete list of policies and procedures.

Students will need to have regular access to the internet and ILCT website

Module 1: You as a Coach provides a welcome to the field of professional coaching, laying the groundwork for entry into this field. An overview of a coaching model is presented; one that integrates core knowledge and skills with competencies to provide the structure and flow of a coaching conversation. The “You as a Coach” series includes:

  • You are present
  • You are an active listener
  • You use powerful questions
  • You create coaching alliances
  • You use empowering skills
  • You forward the action

It also includes human developmental models that provides the basis for how and why coaching is effective.

Module 2: The Business of Coaching This module provides knowledge and skills to effectively launch and market your coaching practice. You will learn how to:

  • Identify your ideal client, specialty area and/or niche
  • Create an elevator speech
  • Develop a marketing plan
  • Explore and integrate marketing ideas

Module 3: Coaching From the Inside Out has been described as a truly transformational process. Students first embark on a personal journey to design their own life before learning how to apply the process and techniques in working with their clients. Topics include:

  • Needs, values, beliefs
  • Life purpose
  • Life design
  • Integrity, standards, choices and boundaries
  • Reserve and abundance
  • Self-care for coaches
